Jo is a Brooklyn-based performer of stage and screen.
Her film and television credits most recently include Amazon’s Transparent: The Musicale Finale, in which Lampert played Gaby Hoffman’s Pfake Pfefferman Pfamily “doppelgänger”, as well as playing inmate Marie Brock in seasons 6 & 7 of Netflix’s Orange is the New Black. She also recurred as Jeremy on Hulu’s The Path, and has made appearances singing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Later… with Jools Holland, and Late Night with Conan O’Brien.
On stage, Jo is most often a part of new works, originating roles in musicals and concert-plays.
Lampert starred as Joan of Arc in David Byrne’s rock-opera Joan of Arc: Into the Fire (Dir. Alex Timbers, @ The Public Theater) for which she was nominated for a Lucille Lortel Award for “Best Actress in a Musical”. Lampert has been seen in other New York Off-Broadway productions including The Bengsons’ Hundred Days (Dir. Anne Kauffman, @ New York Theatre Workshop); playing accordion, keys, and singing lead in Sonya Tayeh’s original dance-symphony you’ll still call me by name (New York Live Arts); The Civilians’ Rimbaud in NY (Dir. Steve Cosson, @ BAM); Bedlam’s & Steven Sater's New York Animals (Dir. Eric Tucker, @ The New Ohio, featuring new music by Burt Bacharach); Iphigenia in Aulis (Dir. Rachel Chavkin, @ Classic Stage Company), and Les Freres Corbusier’s Dance Dance, Revolution (Dir. Alex Timbers, @ The Ohio).
Jo’s regional credits include the role of Mary Magdalene in Jesus Christ Superstar (Dir. Tim Sheader, @ Lyric Opera of Chicago); Marie Antoinette (Dir. Rebecca Taichmann, @ American Repertory Theatre/Yale Rep); Prometheus Bound (Dir. Diane Paulus, A.R.T.), and the role of Mercutio in an musical adaptation of Romeo & Juliet set to the songs of the late, great Jeff Buckley called The Last Goodbye (Dir. Michael Kimmel, Williamstown Theater Festival 2010).
Other stage directors and choreographers she has had the pleasure of working alongside on shows, workshop productions and labs include: Leigh Silverman, Evan Yionoulis, Sam Pinkleton, Steven Hoggett, Tyne Rafaeli, Trip Cullman, Stephen Brackett, Mark Brokaw, Dan Rothenberg (with Pig Iron), Adrienne Campbell-Holt, Gabriel Barre, Stephen Petronio, and Karole Armitage, amongst others.
Lampert has crooned at many-a-music-venue around NYC, including Madison Square Garden, Lincoln Center, City Center, Town Hall, Joe’s Pub, Rockwood Music Hall (Stages 1, 2, and 3), Webster Hall, Bowery Ballroom, Music Hall of Williamsburg, Mercury Lounge, The Manhattan Inn, and more! Some of her favorite moments on stage are nights sharing the stage and singing alongside her friends/collaborators including Shaina Taub, Grace McLean, Gavin Creel, The Bengsons, Max Vernon, Kate Ferber, Lea DeLaria, Faith Soloway, David Cale & Matthew Marsh, Zoe Sarnak, Xavier Smith, Jill Sobule, Nick Blaemire (and the Hustle), Debra Barsha and Salty Brine. It’s singing the oft-crunchy, complex middle harmony that really gets Jo going!
Other credits: Lampert created a solo cabaret called Jo Lampert in the Lounge: An Evening of Magpie Melodies for Ars Nova’s ANTFest in 2016 — it was a night of existing songs re-arranged, re-imagined and performed alongside stories all about “Firsts”. She was also lucky enough to travel to Japan as part of Elizabeth Swados’ The La Mama Cantata, and she went on a world tour singing with the band tUnE-yArDs in support of their 2014 album Nikki Nack. Jo has sung with the jam-band PHISH on multiple occasions, most recently singing for their infamous New Year’s Eve Bash ringing in 2020 at Madison Square Garden. She’s had the pleasure of working at other amazing theaters outside NYC including the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center, the SundanceLab @ MASSMoca, the Yale Institute for Music Theatre, the Know Theatre of Cincinnati, The Kimmel Center of Philadelphia, Jacob’s Pillow in Massachusetts, and Z Space in San Francisco.
Jo is a member of AEA and SAG-AFTRA. She is a proud Civilians Associate Artist.
